Narodni Dom: Trieste, 1904 - 1920

At the beginning of the 20th century, Slovenians in Trieste had a prestigious representative palace, the Narodni Dom. Equipped with the latest technology and multifunctional, it combined cultural and economic activities. The palace had a grand entrance, a café, a restaurant, a five-star hotel, a theater, and provided space for over thirty Slovenian and Slavic associations.

In 1920, newly organized fascist squads, with the silence of the authorities and the consent of the forces of public order, burned down the National Hall as their grand gesture. This was a terrible prediction of how fascism in power would treat Slovenians.

Martina Kafol, originally from Trieste, lives in Slovenia in an old house surrounded by nature. She is an author and TV presenter, screenwriter and documentary director, former Italian lecturer at Moscow University, Russian teacher, and Slovenian lecturer at the University of Udine. For over 15 years, she has been editorial director at ZTT-EST, the publishing house of the Slovenian community in Italy, based in Trieste. She is the author of popular science books and translates from Slovenian, Russian, and German.

Ace (Franc) Mermolja (1951) is a Slovenian poet and publicist, born in Ljubljana. In 1976, Mermolja graduated in Slavic Studies and Comparative Literature from the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana. For some time he was employed as a journalist at Primorski Dnevnik. In 1986 he became the president of the Association of Slovenian Cultural Associations.
